This is how to solve this type:

Let the original price be k
k x 80/100 = 40
Now, let me explain, if you have k x 100/100 you haven't done anything to k. To reduce k by 20% subtract 20 from 100 and you will have k x 80/100 and to increase k by 20% you add 20 to 100 that is k x 120/100. For increase you add to 100 and for decrease you subtract from 100.

Now let's continue
k x 80/100 = 40

Hence, 80k = 4000
If you cross multiply.

Hence, k = 4000/80
k = 50
Therefore, the original price was $50


GRE QUESTION ON RATE

Hose A can fill a tank in 6 hours and Hose B can fill the same tank in 3 hours. If the two hoses are used together, how long will it take to fill the tank?

SOLUTION
This might seem complex but here at Omezuu Consult, I break it down in bits.

In 1 hr Hose A will fill 1/6 of the tank since it can fill the tank in 6 hrs.

Also, in 1 hr Hose B will fill 1/3 of the tank since it can fill the tank in 3 hrs

Using the two hoses, in 1 hr they will fill 1/6 + 1/3 of the tank. That is, they will combine their fractions.

1/6 + 1/3 = (1+2)/6 if you take LCM of 3 and 6 which is 6. Hence we have 1/6 + 1/3 = 3/6 which is 1/2. Therefore, in 1 hr they will fill 1/2 of the tank and in 2hrs they will fill the tank completely.
