A paternity test works by comparing a child’s DNA profile with that of an alleged father (and often the mother as well). Because a child inherits half of his or her DNA from each biological parent, such a comparison reveals whether the child could have inherited DNA from the alleged father. When individuals are biologically related as parent and child, their DNA profiles show predictable patterns of genetic inheritance.Peace of mind paternity testing, also called private or in-home paternity testing, is characterised by the self-collection process. We send sample collection kits to the tested parties, and they perform their own buccal swabbing to collect their DNA samples.
A DNA paternity test–private or legal—requires the participation of a child and an alleged father, at a minimum. If the child’s mother is available for testing, we encourage her to participate as well. When the mother contributes a DNA sample, the laboratory can eliminate her contribution to the child’s genetic profile and focus on whether the child inherited DNA from the tested alleged father.
